Default Best site for eBooks?

I'm new to the whole ebook thing, and just wondered if anyone who has had an ereader could give me any advice on what the best of sites are that are linked to on the Pixelar website? Thanks.

I use www.fictionwise.com when buying ebooks. They have a lot of books many new releases as well. And many books are available in different formats.

For free ebooks I mostly use Gutenberg

you're welcome fifriendly

one of the reasons I like fictionwise is the micropay rabate system they have, but I do think their ebooks (not only theirs other ebookstores as well) are a bit expencive considering the ebooks cost the same as a paperback/tradepaperback/Hardback or nearly the same.

other ebookstores I occasionally use:

www.ereader.com --> they only sell ereader (.pdb) formats which are DRMed (linked to the creditcard used to buy the bookse) and I'm not sure wheather that format can be read on ebook-readers at least not on the Pixelar ereader which is a shame as nearly my entire J.D.Robb's In Death series is in that format

www.mobipocket.com

Default Project Gutenberg

All those "other" sites are simply repackaging the books which Project Gutenberg prepared and add bugs while doing so. So it is best to download ebooks directly from the original source:

http://www.gutenberg.org

(There is one exception from the above rule --- feedbooks.com repackages gutenberg.org's books occasionally _correcting_ them rather than breaking. So, if you downloaded a book from gutenberg.org and it doesn't look right it is worth checking to see if feedbooks.com has the same title in a slightly better format).

Btw, on the formats --- to save you time rediscovering the wheel --- I can advise you that for ebooks the most convenient format (my personal preference) is EPUB, for typeset books PDF, for scanned books DjVu. Unfortunately, some useful data has (e.g. Gesenius Grammar etc) been published only in CHM format so I have to add CHM to the list (even though the format itself is stupid, slow and generally technically illiterate, like almost everything that comes out of ms).

I think that the site www.ebooks.com is probaly the largest and most competitive source for paid downloads. Although you may need to do a currency conversion from USD..although USD tending to be weaker these days!!
